About the Author
Sunggu Lee received the B.S.E.E. degree with highest distinction from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, in 1985 and the M.S.E. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1987 and 1990, respectively. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), Pohang, Korea. Prior to this appointment, he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware, U.S.A. From June 1997 to June 1998, he spent one year as a Visiting Scientist at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center. His research interests are in parallel computing using clusters, fault-tolerant computing, and real-time computing.

This book provides a thoughtful and in depth presentation of the problem we are all facing today as parents. If you had any doubt about whether your common sense observation is correct about the fact your kid could have a tech addiction; this book presents indisputable evidence that your gut feeling is correct.Dr. Kardaras presents an evidenced based case citing scientific study after scientific study to prove the point that we, as a society, are already deep inside the rabbit hole. We have been systemically and purposely deceived by sometimes well intentioned but oftentimes greedy group think corporate heads that placed tech into the hands of our young children.As a physician, and the father of three boys ages two through 11, I have seen first hand the addiction in my kids. The facts presented by Dr. Kardaras will hit you like a ton of bricks. THIS IS ADDICTION--100%It is not often that I read a passage in a book that literally stops me in my tracks and rocks me to my core. Again, as an MD, I've read 100's, if not 1000's of medical texts and articles. Don't get me wrong, you do not need any degree other than common sense to get the point of this book. It is all explained very well so that anyone will get it. But when he speaks of Little Johnny sitting in the corner with his iPad, seemingly in intense quiet concentration and focus. So much that one might say, "Look at how focused Little Johnny is, concentrating so hard on his game." But as Dr. Kardaras pointed out and I can concur from other medical research, Little Johnny 's brain is being damaged by the onslaught of hyper-stimulation. Although he looks so focused and concentrating, his ability to focus and concentrate is actually being destroyed by the hyper stimulation to his cerebral cortex.That was the passage that stopped me cold. How many times have I seen my own kids mesmerized in apparent concentration while their higher order brain centers were being bombarded with sequential rewards and temptations. I literally got sick to my stomach.The second part of the book presented a treatment plan. I implemented this in my life and successfully broke my kids addiction. I used the not well known "Restrictions" functions on their iPad and iPhone device and restricted everything. I confiscated all tech and sent them into painful withdrawal. 6 months later, I am happy to say my older one doesn't even remember or care if he has his phone or not, their grades have improved and although they think this is a punishment, which I keep telling them it's not; we are a much better off family unit.This book will change your life if you think you have kids that are addicted to their devices.Thanks Nick

After a three year crisis with my son, a divorce and me spiraling as a devoted parent, this book saved my sanity and helped me understand the underlying problem I had been facing with my young son. I had a beautiful sweet boy and after we entered public school and the tech world craze with computer games, school tech demands and more consumed us, I realized my problem was bigger than me. My son became addicted and the gaming was saturating every aspect of his social life. These video games are hurting our children, our communities - it's time to tame the compulsion and remember there are other things in life. I personally believe the gaming companies should be sued and held liable for criminally doping our children.

When I filed for a divorce some 4+ years ago, it was a very challenging time. My daughters at the time were 5 and 2, and there was a fundamental difference in outlook in terms of raising the girls. While at the core the girls are fully loved by me and their mother, right from wrong and foundational components are at polar opposite ends of the spectrum.I read voraciously, and I encourage the same of my now 9 and 6 year olds--and it's working... I order several books each month to keep up with their reading habits. They prefer the outdoors to the indoors, but they're still kids in 2017, and there is a grand attraction to the television, and iPads. For all I've done right, I know I've made some poor choices. By providing each of the girls with their very own iPads, I figured that I could limit their time and there would be no harm done. After all, they're climbing trees, building forts, riding bikes, walking the dogs, and reading when they're not with friends or at sporting events. This book is making me reconsider a lot of my choices, or at least recommit to a way of life that will benefit the girls in the long run.The book was recommended to me by my father--not only because I have daughters (he loves the way I raise my girls and keep them more interested in riding horses that playing Candy Crush), but because he has grandchildren who are also glued to a device literally at all times, and it breaks his heart. 50 pages in, he insisted my brother (has two boys same ages as my girls) and I buy it. I read it in a day. A lot of the book is common sense that ain't so common anymore, but the data-driven evidence and support of theories is hard to argue.Is technology bad? No, absolutely not. Is it dangerous? YES. I highly recommend this book to anybody, but particularly those parents out there who wonder if their kids are spending too much time playing video games, surfing the web, etc. It's never too late.

This book is mostly the evidence on the negative effects of electronic devices. Only one short chapter at the end on what to do about it, which could have been summed up in one sentence: Take all electronics away for 4-6 weeks entirely to reset the brain. Then what? Introduce back gradually? How much is healthy?

Every legislator who will ever vote on computers in the classroom should read this before a vote. Every parent should read it before allowing a child to use any computer, ipad, smart phone, etc. The facts are scary. It covers how the physical, mental, social, psychological, and probably more that I've forgotten, aspects of humanity are affected by the glow screen.

This book is chock full of detailed information on the treatment of Adult Acne. I was impressed with the extent of the research that went into this book. The author left nothing to chance, she covers all possible scenarios that could occur with adult acne, even a bit of anatomy was covered in the structure and layers of the skin.This is a great book in and of itself, but what I liked most was that several alternatives were given, from your typical drugs to natural remedies. Even the foods to include in your diet in the fight against adult acne were discussed. Highly recommend!

This is an incredibly comprehensive overview of how to deal with adult acne which, make no mistake, is often different than the acne one experiences as a teenager. Yes, they can both be driven by hormones and hormonal fluctuations, but there are differences, and that means you need to treat them differently.This book covers pretty much every facet of cause (hormones, stress, etc.) and treatment, including internal (diet, medications that you take) and external (how you treat your skin, topical treatments, etc.).I was especially pleased by the author's treatment of diet, because there are so many ways that diet plays a role in how our skin looks and feels, and that includes how it impacts acne.Even though I consider myself very well-versed and well-educated when it comes to diet, and also dealing with adult acne, I still found not only reminders, but things mentioned in the book that would never even have crossed my mind in my everyday life. For example, having found myself single following a period when I wasn't, I was not changing my pillow cases as often as I otherwise would. When I was looking at my face and wondering why most of my (admittedly minor, but still a big deal to me) acne was all on just one side of my face, it suddenly hit me: that's the side of my face that is in contact with my pillow for 6 or more hours a night! I ran out and bought a few more pillow cases, and have started changing them more frequently, and whaddaya know! My acne on that side is clearing up! Doh!I also want to mention this homeopathic anti-acne product that I have been using (no harsh medications for me, thank you, although she does cover them in the book, and they can be useful for people): Natrabio Acne Relief TabletsI will say that I found a couple of typos/omitted words in the ebook, however I am not deducting any stars for them (even though I ordinarily would) for two reasons: 1. The book is so darned thorough, and readable, and 2. The author kindly sent me the book as a PDF so that I could easily read and review it, and I know that sometimes when translating a text to PDF things can happen. So, I feel that mentioning it here is sufficient. :-)In full disclosure, Kyla sent me this to review, however I am not bashful about giving my true opinion of a product (hey, I'm a lawyer, just try to *stop* me from giving my opinion! :~) )

My teenage son has severe cystic acne and I have spent hours upon hours researching every possible treatment plan from prescription medications to home remedies and even old wives tales. Kyla has compiled all the relevant research available based on her own personal experience battling acne and the scars it leaves behind - physically and emotionally - and put it all together into a compact, easy-to-read format that will make you a near expert overnight. What she has in this book is based on real science, including her own interviews with the best acne experts she could find. Read the book before you talk with your own doctor and you'll be able to have the kind of serious, informed, life-altering discussions you need to have rather than just trying one thing after another with no success. This book deserves more than two thumbs up - it's a guide book that shows you the way out of the severe cystic acne tunnel.

This is an excellent resource for dealing with adult acne. It is obvious the author has done her research on the hormonal, bacterial, stress and dietary causes of acne that affect adults. She has also provided a range of treatment options from diet changes (including recipes in the back!), OTC treatments, product ingredients to avoid and dermatological options. My only piece of advice (and it's a bit of a picky one) is to have a works cited page. There is an extensive list of resources, but it would be nice to have footnotes when a specific work is cited (especially if a direct quote is being used). A remarkable book written by an obviously brilliant author who understands biography and music. I spent 10 months savoring this story of the great Beethoven's life while listening to his pieces along the way (bought a 60 CD compilation of his works). Frankly, I'm in awe of the depth of Swafford's research and his ability to pull innumerable facts together and tell them in a compelling story. I've read several hundred biographies. This is one of the best.

I'm going to say straight up, without any reservations, that it must have sucked to be Beethoven. We all know about his deafness and anger issues, but I was not prepared for the emotional rollercoaster this book took me on. With the myriad problems he had, it's nothing short of astounding how productive he was in his composing, et al. Of course, like the biographies I've been reading recently, there is plenty of musical analysis in between the life narrative and excerpts from correspondence, etc. I thought it was all rather sound, supplemented by plenty of musical examples, and well-integrated into the book as a whole. For the first few chapters, there was a tendency to meander as the time period was set up, but things flowed better when Swafford got to the meat of the story. I'm sure there are other equally good biographies of Beethoven (I've got two more lined up already), but this one would probably be sufficient for someone who is just dabbling instead of doing serious research. Because of the musical discussion, I will say that this book will probably be more useful to the musically inclined. All around, it's a great book that practically had me in tears by the final chapter. Highly recommended.

A book of over 1,000 pages does require a commitment, but this book is certainly worth it. I actually had to put it aside for a while after originally purchasing it because I felt it would be helpful to listen to the music in conjunction with reading Swafford's explication of it. I needed to be in a certain frame of mind for that approach. The biography is excellent because it unites the life and personality of Beethoven the man with insight into his music, his motivations, and the nature of his genius all within the context of his times. I thought it was a broad but relevantly detailed biography which gave me a complete picture through the eyes and ears of Jan Swafford. I loved it.

Beethoven is one of the most written-about figures in history, and saying something new about his life is almost impossible. But the author takes a fresh look at the composer's life and music, writing with gentle humor and even affection, for the composer whose suffering often made him moody, irritable, temperamental, and impossible to live with. Deep down, Beethoven had a warm heart and generosity, even an outrageous sense of humor that ultimately made him lovable and even noble. His courageous endurance and love for humanity (though not actual people around him) led to some of the world's greatest music.I am enjoying this biography very much. I would say the main flaw is lengthy and technical descriptions of Beethoven's work. Non-musicians might really get swamped, and simply skip to the narrative parts. Music is almost impossible to write about. Someone once said "Beethoven's music is music about music."Although Beethoven did name some works (the "Eroica" Symphony," the "Appassionata,") he usually preferred to let the music speak for itself and was furious when it was given ridiculous names. The famous "Moonlight" Sonata was named years after his death, and known in his time as the "Arbor Sonata" because he supposedly composed it while sitting in an arbor. Also "Fur Elise," his most famous piano piece, was discovered in the papers of a young lady named Therese Malfatti, one of Beethoven's hopeless flames.There are no breathless new discoveries and shocking revelations about Beethoven's life, but this biography is well worth reading as a celebration of the great composer who left such musical treasures to our world. I've even been inspired to learn the "Emperor" concerto again!
